The year is IA1099, 1214AD in our calendar, and over a millennium since The Divine Fire wrought its terrible destruction in southern Europe. 

The old tribes, countries and kingdoms have long since fallen, leaving the four great empires in an uneasy peace. Expansion to gain the powers of the magical crystals and divine focuses was always the strategy, and the peace will not last as long as these artefacts of power remain to be won on the fields of battle.
